Eternal Lilac

Lengthen the cycles

Ines Alpha x Allure Magazine

Three years later

It was three years ago that I wrote my first article about the Lilac colour. It seems like we are not done with it yet ! Lilac is still booming everywhere and, personally, I am still in love with it. I don’t seem to be the only one.

I think purple being the Pantone colour of the year gave the Lilac shade an extra boost. But how come people and creatives remain so fond of this shade after all this time ?

Lengthen the cycles

Three years ago, we could see Lilac a lot in product design and decoration. Today it’s in every fashion catwalk. Colours often pop up in one creative field after the other until they are not fashionable anymore. But it seems that Lilac did the whole cycle and is going for another round.

And when you think about it, this is a very good thing !

Since the Covid crisis and the successive lockdowns, the speed of trends has very much slowed down. Topics of interest and colour palettes stay relevant for much longer. It’s like we’ve learned how to appreciate things better, we’ve learned that life can be lived at a slower pace.

It is a quite reassuring thing to observe because, as it is, the speed of our society and our lives is unrealistic in the long term. We will have to slow down, to reuse, to keep things longer, to appreciate what we have, but it's not a reason to stop using colours. We just have to appreciate them longer and reinvent our approach to them.

Why Lilac ?

In my first article, I was explaining how Lilac was a colour both digital and spiritual. I believe it is still very much true. It is a soft, meditative colour making a link between the real world and the digital one. And it is a colour for women’s rights.

These topics remain central topics today. The digital world is merging more and more with real life and a deep need for spirituality is rising. I think both these topics are linked to a growing fear of the future that we can avoid diving in the metaverse or confront by getting stronger with spiritual tools. Lilac really embodies our relationship to the future.

Queen Elisabeth II

Tribute

The first person I think about when I think of the colour Lilac is our beloved Queen Elisabeth II who left us a few weeks ago.

Even though purple is also the colour of royalty I like the idea that Lilac was the Queen’s favourite colour because it is the colour for women’s rights. I know that royalty is criticisable, that she was not perfect and maybe I’ve watched the Crown too many times (three), but Elisabeth II is for me an amazing feminist figure that I really admire.

Even though we are in 2022, we are not there yet when it comes to women’s rights. In times of fear, we must remember that things that seem earned for good can actually get quite fragile and that some of us are still fighting for the most basic of rights.

Let’s never stop fighting for women’s rights to do and be what they want.

COLOUR

Compared to 2019, this shade of Lilac is slightly more saturated and bold. Eternal Lilac is here to stay.
